about

Mexicans With Guns returns, following up May’s Me Gusto 12″ co-released on Friends of Friends & Innovative Leisure, and this time he’s not here to steam your tortilla. Known by day as Exponential Records jefe Ernest Gonzales, MwG blows his blend of laser-lit dubstep and breakbeat through the heavy air of his native San Antonio until it’s covered in sweat.

Leadoff track “Icaros” refers to medicine songs performed by Amazonian shamans, typically marked by the instrumentation of a chakapa, a rattle MwG references between natural swamp sonics. These sounds conjure up “Sell Your Soul” featuring Rainbow Arabia’s Tiffany Preston, who delivers her hook over a raging church organ until she echoes back out to whatever plane she visited from. Finally, “Obsidian” cools thing down to a halt before MwG rides off, magma tipped.

His counterpart is Berlin’s Robot Koch, who rolls out his geographically resistant take on club ready dubstep on the flip. Also recognizable for his role in dubstep trio Jahcoozi (BPitch Control) as well as post-rock project The Tape, here Koch brings the same wobbly synths that dominated his recent solo LP Death Star Droid. “I Get That Dough” features MC Addiquit buttressed by sprays of colorful noise and a funky kick, before Koch gets ominously supernatural himself on “Devil Drums.” For his swan song he calls in Sasha Perera, herself a fellow member of Jahcoozi who coos “whoever brought us here lives inside of my headphones” through a pulsing downtempo.

With such an unbelievable collection of talent assuming the remixing duties on Vol. 3, let’s just say we feel fortunate to have friends who have such talented friends! These artists, established or bubbling, are some of our favorites…including Free the Robots (Alpha Pup), Lunice (Lucky Me), Mux Mool (Ghostly), Salva (Frite Nite), Alex B (Elm&Oak), and King Cannibal (Ninja Tune). FoF Volume 3 drops October 5th digitally and on limited-edition vinyl– don’t sleep & tell your friends!
